Passport & Visa to Vietnam, information about passport & Visa on arrival, visa procedure to visit VietnamA 6 month valid passport and a visa are required of all foreigners visiting Vietnam. Most visitors to Vietnam need a visa to enter the country. Visas are exempted for the citizens of the countries, which have signed a bilateral or unilateral visa exemption agreement with Vietnam; tourist visa may be valid for 30 days to 90 days and maybe extended after your arrival in Vietnam.

Procedure for applying Vietnam visa:
Tourist visa can only be obtained in Vietnamese embassies or consulates abroad. Otherwise, you can get a visa at the border gates if you are invitees of some Vietnamese competent organs or you are traveling on a package tour organized by Vietnamese travel companies.

Processing time vary from country to country and usually take between 2-5 business days to complete. Fees for visa also vary and most embassies require applicants to contact them directly to check the most updated fee. You will also need to pay for the prepaid courier if you do not plan to pick up the visa in person.

Business visas require similar documentation to tourist visa. If you apply through Vietnamese embassy, you will need to submit a sponsorship letter by a licensed Vietnamese company but this is not required if you apply for visa-on-arrival. This letter can come from your trade partner or your employer.

To apply for a visa to Vietnam at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate abroad, the requirements are as follows:
Entry permit form (which can vary from one Vietnamese embassies or consulate abroad to another) - There are two categories of this form: for foreigners and for Vietnamese overseas.

  • Original passport (Valid at least 6 months)
  • Visa application form
  • Two photos (4cm x 6cm or 3cm x 4cm)
  • Other documents required by the embassy or consulate
  • Visa fee.

You should send your application and photos to a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country, which is most convenient to you. On your requirement, the reply will be returned by post (you must provide stamped envelopes with your name and address).

Visa on arrival by a Vietnamese Travel Agent:

This can be done online via a number of private companies who have agreements with the Vietnamese government to collect passport details and arrange for an "approval letter". These agencies charge a small fee for their service and in most case, the total works out to be equal or less than the amount charged by Vietnamese embassies and consulates. It must also be noted that visa-on-arrival works only for visitors arriving in Vietnam by air.

The necessary information to the travel agency includes:
